A native of the Beaufortain region, Alain Bar draws from his mountain roots a sensitivity to gesture and effort.

A former top-level sportsman in cycling and skiing, then a committed teacher, he chose engraving as his artistic language, attracted by the demands of the material and the precision of the gesture.
His work is all about purity. Where the painter fleshes out, Alain Bar withdraws. He strips reality down to its essentials: a few taut, vibrant lines, a vital impulse. The line becomes movement, energy, memory of the body in action. Between figuration and abstraction, his engravings reveal a singular expression, where the calligraphic gesture asserts itself as a body language in its own right.
