Alpe d’Huez is the perfect destination for an active day out. Thanks to the resort’s many free activities, visitors of all ages can enjoy a varied programme combining nature, sport, discovery and entertainment.

9:30 a.m. 🥾 A relaxing walk around Lake Besson

Start your day at a gentle pace with a visit to the famous Lake Besson and its neighbouring lakes (Lake Noir, Lake Faucille and Lake Carrelet). Simply hop on the free shuttle from the Rond-Point des Pistes (departures run throughout the day). Just ten minutes later, you’ll arrive at one of Alpe d’Huez’s most iconic natural sites, where breathtaking mountain views, crystal-clear waters and wide-open alpine landscapes await.

Here, there’s something for everyone: enjoy a leisurely stroll, set off on a hike, try a bit of rock climbing, admire the anglers’ catch, snack on wild blueberries, play archaeologist in search of ancient oceanic ripple marks, have fun in the playground, enjoy a game of pétanque or simply watch the marmots from a respectful distance. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy quality time with the family surrounded by spectacular Alpine scenery.

🚨 Marmots are wild animals, not pets ! Feeding wildlife in the mountains is never a good idea. It disrupts animals’ natural behaviour, threatens their health and upsets the balance of the ecosystem. Please respect wildlife by observing animals from a distance and allowing them to live undisturbed in their natural habitat.

11:00 a.m. 🛹 Thrills and fun at the skate park and pump track

After a peaceful morning in nature, head to the Île aux Loisirs, home to Alpe d’Huez’s free-access skate park and pump track. Whether you’re riding a scooter, BMX, rollerblades or a skateboard, everyone can have fun at their own pace in a friendly atmosphere, alongside local riders showing off kickflips, ollies and backsides.

Just a few metres away, the Bergers Playground is the perfect spot for families with young children. Swings, a sandpit and fun play structures provide hours of entertainment. It’s one of six play areas across the resort, not forgetting the popular water play area, perfect for cooling off on warm summer days.

12:30 p.m. 🚠 Lunch break in a gondola cabin

Over the years, the gondola cabins across the Alpe d’Huez ski area have been replaced with newer, more comfortable models. Rather than letting the old cabins go to waste, they have been given a second life as unique picnic spots and cosy shelters where visitors can take a break or wait out a passing shower.

Installed at the foot of the ski area and freely accessible to everyone, these former gondola cabins offer an unusual setting to enjoy lunch or simply relax while taking in the beautiful mountain views.

2:00 p.m. 🏐 Sports activities for the whole family

Once lunch is over, it’s time to dive straight into the many free activities available nearby. While some visitors gather for a game of pétanque, others can enjoy a game of football, play volleyball with their feet in the sand, ride along the Rif Nel flow trail or try their hand at fishing in the Bergers lake.

At Alpe d’Huez, everyone can find an activity to enjoy — you just need to remember to pack the right gear before setting off !

3:30 p.m. 🧭 Explore the resort with orienteering

At Agoralp and the Tourist Office, three orienteering courses are available free of charge: the Brandes archaeological site, Around the Lakes and Huez Village. Each route comes with a map featuring checkpoints to find and markers to punch, along with fun and educational information about local culture, heritage, history, wildlife and flora.

Each starting point is easily accessible free of charge by shuttle bus or the Huez Express. It’s the perfect activity to learn how to navigate while discovering Alpe d’Huez from a different perspective.

Alpe d’Huez launches three themed audio-guided tours Alpe d’Huez has recently introduced three audio-guided routes, available through the geolocation-based Pilgrimz app: the Brandes archaeological site, Huez Village, and the story of the resort from its origins to the present day. 5:30 pm: ⚒️ Step back into medieval times

Did you know that Alpe d’Huez is home to a Museum of History and Archaeology? The only high-altitude museum to be awarded the “Musée de France” label, it sheds light on the history of silver mining during the Middle Ages and traces the evolution of Alpe d’Huez, from its first inhabitants to the birth of the ski resort.

Inside the display cases, you will discover the treasures uncovered during archaeological excavations regularly carried out since the 1970s: game pieces, clothing, keys, a skull, a belt buckle… The discoveries are both fascinating and surprising. Today, they help piece together the history of France’s highest medieval village.

7:00 pm: 🐺 Meet the Werewolf

At the end of the day, the resort comes alive with free entertainment and shows. Concerts, family performances and events in the resort centre are the perfect way to round off the day. This summer, the famous Werewolf game comes to the Bergers area for a fun session (or several!) featuring all the characters. Around a brazier, as the sun sets, the village awakens.
